교양영어사전

개인적으로 글을 읽으면서 저자를 만나보고 싶다는 생각은 해본적이 없지만 이 저자만은 개인적으로 꼭 한번 만나고 싶다. 영어관련 종사자도 아니면서 이렇게 재미있고 유익하고 영어공부에 도움이 되는 책을 쓸수 있다는게 정말 대단한것 같다. 전설에 의하면 이 저자는 3개월에 한번씩 책을 출간한다고 한다. 이 책의 흥미로운 점은 방대한 참고문헌과 인용예마다 어디서 참조하였는지 밝혔다는것이다. 많은 책들이 누가 그랬다고 언급하면서도 인용논문이나 책을 표시하지 않고 제일 뒤에다 와장창 문헌들만 언급한다. 중간쯤 읽다가 2권도 구매했다. 지금 30페이지 정도만 읽으면 끝난다. 이렇게 참지 못하고 비평을 하는 이유는 오자때문이다. 오자 많다. 영어 오자는 참겠는데 한글 오자가 나오니 참을 수가 없다. 너무 화가 난다. 왜 우리나라 책들 특히 번역본은 오자 있는책이 많단 말인가. 독자에 대한 기만이다. 엿먹으라는것과 같다. 영문 외국서적들 많이 읽어보지는 않았지만 오자 거의 없다. 이런 흥미있는 책조차 오자투성이라니 분노한다. 개정판에는 오자를 정정하기 바란다. P713 않으면 -> 않으면서 P696 말하는 -> 말라는 P669 in order than -> in order that P618 sbobocrcay-> snobocracy P480 joab -> Joab P343 moth -> month morrow -> tomorrow 앞쪽에 영어 오자 더 있다. 한글 오자라도 없었으면 좋겠다.
네이티브 스피커도 잘 모르는 영어 어원, 그들도 작업하기 쉽지 않은 ‘영어 어원사전’이 한국인에 의해 태어나다

그간 200여 권이 넘는 책을 내며 정치, 사회, 문화, 역사를 망라한, 전 방위적인 글쓰기를 해온 강준만이 드디어 ‘영어 어원사전’까지 출간했다. 네이티브 스피커도 잘 모르는 영어 어원을 토종 한국인이 862쪽에 달하는 방대한 분량의 어원사전으로 집필했다는 건 저자 특유의 호기심과 성실함을 잘 드러내주는 대목이다. 영어의 관용적 표현을 대하더라도 이게 왜 이런 뜻을 갖게 되었는지 그걸 꼭 알아야만 직성이 풀렸던 못 말렸던 그의 버릇 덕택에 우리는 영어 어원에 관한 귀중한 책을 얻게 되었다.

이미 미국사 산책 을 통해 영어 어원에 호기심을 보여 온 강준만은, 거기에 그치지 않고 작업을 계속해서 나온 결과물인 이 책에서 토포노미(Toponomy: 지명유래연구), 오노마스틱스(Onomastics: 고유명사연구), 에티몰로지(Etymology: 어원학)뿐만 아니라 에포님(eponym: 이름의 시조, 누군가의 이름을 따서 만든 단어), 네오로지즘(neologism: 신조어)을 연구의 대상으로 삼았다. 심지어는 널리 쓰이는 슬랭(slang: 속어)과 상업적 브랜드 이름의 유래, 영어 단어와의 관련성이 높은 인문?사회과학적 개념의 유래도 빠짐없이 책에 챙겨 넣었다.

또 엄청난 자료광으로 유명한 강준만은 교양영어사전 에서도 방대한 분량의 자료를 사용해 책의 정확성과 권위를 높였다. 이 책을 집필하기 위해 산 관련 서적이 수백 권에 이르렀다고 고백한다.(5쪽) 그 수백 권이 넘는 관련 서적이 분문에 3000개가 넘는 주석으로 빼곡히 달려 있다. 책 뒤쪽에 실려 있는 일반 단행본 한 권에 육박하는 엄청난 부피의 주석을 보면 실감이 날 것이다. 그처럼 방대한 분량의 영어 어원 이야기를 우린 한 권으로 만난다.
